Thailand is a remarkable place to live.
Mountain, cities, beaches, islands, tourists areas, Thailand has it all.
When people are young and move to Thailand, they surround themselves in all these areas.
Perhaps it is to have some likeness or commonality to their own country?
There is certainly plenty of entertainment and things to do.
As the years roll on, you have seen and done everything 100 times.
It is very possible as you get older you grow tired and wary of the tourists areas and rat race of the cities.
Now what?
I am still a believer than rural Thailand offers the best chance at a normal life.
However, there are all kinds of variables when considering the location you will retire to.
Singles might want to be in areas with other singles, entertainment etc.
Married may want the peace and quiet of rural Thailand.
Each person will have their own requirements for where to retire to.
As far as rural Thailand. It is the cheapest place in the entire country.
Getting a house built is about as cheap as you can find, and if married to a Thai, you can own a ton of land to do gardening, fish ponds, fruit trees, farming, animals or what ever it is you like to do.
Rural life is not for everyone, but I do believe it suits those that have already retired and are looking for an easier pace of life.
If you are a social butterfly and constantly need to hold hands with other expats at the bar, rural Thailand is not the place for you.
However, there are some very attractive benefits.
You can build a large house very cheap.
Food is very cheap.
Services are very cheap.
Non existent hassle with police or immigration
Friendly, helpful country people.
Fresh air
Loads of local festivals and markets
My husband is a retired US expat.
He has traveled all over Thailand and now finds the need for peace and quiet, a stress-free existance.
Rural Thailand meets all his needs.
A wonderful western style house, 26 rai of land including a fish pond, fruit trees, rice and vegetable gardens. Swimming pool and outdoor entertaining area. Everything he needs at a total cost lower than a condo in the tourist areas.
Relatives are in the same village, which makes getting together quite convenient.
Most people say they would get bored sick living in rural Thailand.
I can see that as being true when you are young.
However as you approach 65 to 70 and beyond, the peaceful, stress-free living is exactly what the doctor ordered.
I believe if more people had the chance to visit and learn about rural Thai life, they would agree.
