Caution: Wild Elephants

Khao Yai National Park is a good place to see wild elephants.

However, you must use extreme caution.

Elephants will come out of the jungle to walk along the paved road.

Many of their paths into the jungle appear to cross the road at multiple locations.

Once a year, elephants go into a condition know as musth.

Musth is a periodic condition in bull (male) elephants characterized by aggressive behavior and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones.

The aggressive behavior has often been taken out cars and trucks parked on the roadway.

The best advise is to reserve away from these oncoming elephants until they go back into the jungle.

The bad news is there are so many Thai people desperate to see a wild elephant, they form a traffic jam where reversing is impossible.

The majority of the year, the elephants are calm and can walk by the cars and trucks with no issues.

However, when an elephant is in musth, they can be wildly aggressive and damage vehicles.

National Parks have rules concerning getting close to the wild elephants, but most people do not follow them.
