There are 2 schools of thought when it comes to moving to Thailand and shipping personal goods. One thought is to sell everything and buy new when you get to Thailand. The problem I see with that plan is quality. You will never get the same quality in Thailand. Maybe this is ok for people that don’t really own anything.
However, if you have an entire house full of furniture and household goods it may well be better to have them shipped to Thailand in a 40′ container.
My entire dining room is worth over US $20,000+. That contains a $5,500 dining set, a $3,500 hutch, collectible crystal and Italian glass, and 1960’s fine china.
The average price to ship a 40′ container from Miami, Florida to Bangkok, Thailand in 2023 is between $4,500 and $8,500. The exact price will depend on a number of factors, including the current market conditions, the specific route, the type of goods being shipped, and the level of service required.
We also have solid wood bedrooms sets, an entire kitchen full of kitchen ware, bedding, towels, home gym equipment, vintage musical instruments, artwork, you name it.
There is also a garage full of expensive tools, riding tractor, ladders, etc.
In our case, we could not replace the quality of these items, plus be able to keep the antiques and keepsakes we have collected over the years.
So a container makes sense to us.
Here are some of the factors that can affect the price of shipping a container from Miami to Bangkok:
- The current market conditions: The price of shipping containers fluctuates with the market. When demand is high, prices tend to be higher.
- The specific route: The distance between the two ports, the number of stops along the way, and the time of year can all affect the price.
- The type of goods being shipped: Some goods are more expensive to ship than others. For example, hazardous materials and oversized cargo will typically cost more to ship.
- The level of service required: The level of service required can also affect the price. For example, express shipping will typically cost more than standard shipping.
If you are shipping a 40′ container from Miami to Bangkok, it is important to get quotes from multiple shipping companies to get the best price. You can also use a freight forwarder to help you with the shipping process.
Here are some of the shipping companies that you can get quotes from:

As a Thai National or married to a Thai National and moving back to Thailand, there is no import tax on these items.
