Bangkok Street Flooding in 2023

Bangkok is no stranger to street flooding. Every year, during the rainy season, the city’s drainage system is overwhelmed by heavy rains, leading to widespread flooding on streets and sidewalks. In 2023, the flooding was particularly severe, causing widespread disruption and damage.

The flooding was caused by a combination of factors, including:

  • Heavy rains: Bangkok received more rain than usual during the 2023 rainy season. This overwhelmed the city’s drainage system, which is already old and outdated.
  • Urbanization: Bangkok is a densely populated city, and its rapid urbanization has led to increased impervious surfaces, such as roads and buildings. This makes it more difficult for rainwater to drain away.
  • Sea level rise: Sea level rise is also contributing to flooding in Bangkok. As the sea level rises, more saltwater is inundating the city’s drainage system, making it more difficult to drain away rainwater.

The flooding had a significant impact on the city. Businesses were forced to close, schools were closed, and transportation was disrupted. Many people were also displaced from their homes. The flooding also caused damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and power lines.

The Thai government has taken some steps to address the problem of street flooding in Bangkok. However, more needs to be done to improve the city’s drainage system and to reduce the impact of urbanization and sea level rise.

The problem of street flooding in Bangkok is complex and there is no easy solution.

This has been an ongoing problem throughout the years as numerous Bangkok Governors have change and no one has fixed this problem.

Flooding streets drive the cities rats out of their cover and you can often see them scurrying on the sidewalks in broad daylight.

The flooded streets are extremely polluted and should be avoided at all costs.
