Cold Temperatures

Believe it or not, it does get cold in Thailand. Even in Isaan where I live.

Towards Christmas, it is so cold in Isaan you really need a winter jacket.

Most families do not have heat and it is very cold in the morning.

Even my new car does not have heat to keep the car warm and the windows from fogging over.

You can often see people in rural Isaan burning wood, just to try to stay warm, as there is no other alternative.

The coldest months in Thailand are December and January.

The coldest location in Thailand is Sakon Nakhon, a province in the northeastern part of the country. During the winter months, temperatures in Sakon Nakhon can drop to as low as 5°C (41°F).

Other cold locations in Thailand include:

  • Chiang Mai
  • Chiang Rai
  • Doi Inthanon National Park
  • Khao Kho
  • Phitsanulok

In these locations, temperatures can drop to as low as 10°C (50°F) at night.

It is important to note that even during the coldest months in Thailand, temperatures rarely drop below freezing. However, the temperature drop can be significant enough to make it feel cold to people who are used to warmer climates.

If you are planning to visit Thailand during the winter months, it is a good idea to pack a light jacket or sweater. You may also want to pack a pair of long pants, especially if you are planning to visit the northern parts of the country.
