What happens if you live in Thailand and your Thai wife passes away before you do?
Good question that ponders some thought and planning.
The first thing, is if you are on a marriage visa, the visa will finish at the end of it’s expiry date.
At this time, you would have a couple of options.
Convert the marriage visa to a retirement visa. This would mean instead of 400,000 thb parked in the bank each year, it would be 800,000 thb.
If you have Thai children, you can convert to a visa as the parent of Thai children.
Short of those 2 options or the Thai ELITE visa, if you have a ton of money saved.
Another big issue with be the land and house.
The foreigner can sell the house/land, as after the wife passes, the foreigner cannot legally own the land in his name. Maybe transfer to a relative who lets you live there until you die?
If you have children, transfer ownership to them.
The best advice is to get lawyer and do not listen to social media.
It is odd some foreigners are still alive at age 90, when their Thai wife might have passed away at age 60? It does happen.
Surely not a pleasant topic, but one that is better outlined and planned in advance.
At age 90, you do not have to worry about getting booted back to your own country.
