It is possible to have a good life in Thailand on US $1,000 a month, IF?
The IF is if you do not have monthly bills.
The First case is if you rent.
You can find a low cost rental and still be able to have a decent life in Thailand on US $1,000 a month.
If you keep your rental under US $400 a month, it still leaves another US $600 (20,400 thb) to pay for utilities and food. Yes you can find rentals for US $400 a month of less.
This should leave you with money to eat out, go to the movies, do some domestic traveling and shopping.
The Second case is if you own a home.
If you own a home and it is paid for free and clear, you will only need to pay for food, utilities and insurance. US $1,000 should leave you with plenty left over each month.
Budgets will increase if you need/buy a car.
You can buy a brand new motorbike from Honda or Yamaha to get around for about US $3,000 brand new or less if used.
Budgets will increase if you are heavy into alcohol, partying and having to pay for sex.
Each person that moves to Thailand has to make their own financial decisions.
The smart people can make this work, but there are many others forced to move back home.
Be smart, plan out a smart budget before moving and stick to it.
One thing to remember, is what are you doing about retirement when you get to age 60+?
Saving for retirement should be a main factor in your budgeting plan!
