Know Where the Toilet Is

For first timers to Thailand, there is inevitably going to be a time when you will eat some street food that your stomach does not agree with.

It happens to everyone and you should understand that and be prepared.

Before you order and sit down at your table, as your server where the nearest toilet is.

Sounds strange, but you never know when you can get sick from the food and need a toilet right away.

To ask where the bathroom is, you can say “hâwng-náam yùu nǎi khá” for women and “hâwng-náam yùu nǎi khráp” for men

Be prepared and it also helps to carry your own toilet paper!

Toilet Tips:

Here are some things to know about toilets in Thailand:

  • Squat toilets. Most toilets in Thailand are squat toilets, which are considered to be healthier and more hygienic than Western sit-down toilets.
  • Hand sprayer. Most toilets have a hand sprayer attached to clean yourself with after using the toilet.
  • Toilet paper. After using the sprayer, you can use toilet paper to dry off and put it in the bin.
  • Rural bathrooms. Some rural bathrooms only have a bucket and tap, where you can splash water on yourself with your hands.
  • Wet wipes. You can carry wet wipes and a small plastic bag to carry your trash away
