I often hear expats complaining about all the smog in Chiang Mai during 3 – 4 months of every year.
This is due to local farmers, like this one, that manually set their rice fields on fire to clear the rice stubble to get the fields ready for planting season.
Surely in 2023 there must be some machinery that can do this job without burning?
However, it often comes down to cost, which most rice farmers cannot afford.
So the burning continues, ruining the air quality for months.
