It is no secret many men come to Thailand in search of a girlfriend or future wife.
Besides super good looks and slender figures, do foreigners give any considerations to other things?
Social status?
Education?
Financial?
Job/job skills or the ability to earn money?
In my case, in the beginning, I had none of the above.
Super poor from rural Isaan.
Didn’t know anything, didn’t really even know how to dress like a lady or to makeup.
No need for that on a farm.
Yet my husband chose me on believing he could raise me up to a status (maybe, where I would not embarrass him LOL).
So in his case, he had already thought ahead of the many situations in his own life, his new wife would have to interact and fit in.
He always tried from day to ensure I could stand on my own two feet and not be ridiculed by anyone at any level.
We all understand the perception many Thai women get around the world of being prostitutes.
Men have two choices when marrying a Thai woman.
Take her just the way she is or try to make her a better version of herself.
Some men are jealous and afraid to do anything, fearing she will leave later on.
Some women get lucky and really have a husband that will do anything for you.
My husband is super educated and made a huge amount in his life. However, in the beginning, when I first saw him, I couldn’t tell anything about his status. He was very low key.
It took quite some time before I started to realize he may have had a high status. He would take me places and I could tell the respect he would receive and also the cost he was affording.
For me, I wanted to be better and I did not want to be the dumb acting Thai wife everyone would talk about behind my back.
Not having any money for anything, I had always dreamed of nice clothes, jewelry and being able to take care of myself.
I believe my husband saw something in me day 1, but also saw the huge potential that I, myself, wanted to achieve.
When looking for a partner in Thailand, you can chose one for all the wrong reasons (see Thailand’s high expat divorce rates), or you can make a list of things that are important to you find the right match.
I honestly didn’t think I would ever match with anyone.
Fast forward 18 years, with everything I have learned, we are truly a perfect match!
