Star fruit, also known as carambola or ma-fuang in Thai, is a common fruit in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia during the rainy season.
The fruit grows on trees native to tropical regions and has distinctive ridges that run down its sides, giving it a star-like appearance when cut in cross-section.
The entire fruit is edible and can be eaten raw, cooked, or used in juices, preserves, relishes, or as a garnish.
Star fruit comes in two main varieties: small and tart, or large and sweet.
Some say the fruit tastes best when it’s yellow with a hint of green, while others prefer it when it’s more orangey-yellow, softer, and sweeter.
The flavor is unique and can be similar to a combination of apple, grape, pear, and citrus.
For me, I love the Carambola (Ma-Fuang) when it is super ripe. It is very sweet and delicious.
Star Fruit trees can start producing even when the tree is little and each tree will produce an abundance of fruit.
